JENNIE to debut first animated film track on Netflix's 'Steps' soundtrack

A new musical contribution from JENNIE arrives this November. The BLACKPINK vocalist will release “Someone to Hold” as part of the official soundtrack for Netflix’s animated feature Steps.

The film and its accompanying album are scheduled to launch on November 20. However, audiences can already listen to a snippet of the track via the recently released trailer. The broader soundtrack also includes original music from Amanda Seyfried, Rose Gray, and EMEI, with Kris Bowers handling the score.

JENNIE’s First Animated Film Song

In a statement provided by Netflix, JENNIE confirmed that “Someone to Hold” represents her inaugural song written specifically for an animated movie. She expressed enthusiasm about joining the project.

“I am so excited to join the Steps family and it was really fun making my first song for an animated film!” JENNIE said. She added that she loves the heart and personality of the characters and is happy to be a small part of their world.

Directors Alyce Tzue and John Ripa noted that the song captures the sisterhood dynamic between the film’s three central figures: Lilith, Cinderella, and Margot.

Songwriter Justin Tranter’s Vision

Justin Tranter wrote and produced the four original songs on the soundtrack in collaboration with the project’s team. In the announcement, Tranter characterized JENNIE’s contribution as “pure danceable joy inspired by vintage organic dance pop.”

The soundtrack features distinct styles across its tracks. Rose Gray performs “Meet Me on the Dance Floor,” while Amanda Seyfried sings “Smile and a Song.” EMEI contributes a piece drawn from Lilith’s experience of feeling overlooked.

Tranter explained that dance music serves as a connective thread throughout much of the album, though he highlighted Amanda Seyfried’s musical-theater number as offering a contrasting sound.

Cinderella Retold Through Stepsisters

Steps presents an alternative version of the classic Cinderella narrative, shifting the focus to the stepsisters. The plot centers on Lilith stealing the Fairy Godmother’s wand and taking over the Royal Ball alongside her sister Margot.

This action leaves the kingdom under the control of Priscilla. Consequently, Lilith must collaborate with Cinderella to restore order. The voice cast includes Ali Wong as Lilith, Stephanie Hsu as Margot, and Amanda Seyfried as Cinderella.

Additional cast members include Nikki Glaser, Daniel Radcliffe, Young Mazino, Peter Dinklage, and Bette Midler. Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell, and Kim Lessing serve as producers for the movie.

Fans can pre-save the soundtrack now. While awaiting the full release, listeners may revisit JENNIE’s Fallen Angel EP.
