A delay in responding to a film offer prompted Taylor Swift to verify that her eventual acceptance did not displace another artist. During a Q&A session with director Andrew Stanton on Sunday, November 1, the Grammy-winning musician disclosed that she persistently inquired whether the production team had moved on to someone else during her period of unavailability.

Concerns Over Displacing Another Artist

Swift joined Stanton for a special screening and discussion regarding the animated feature, focusing on the creation of her end-credits track, “I Knew It, I Knew You.” The song debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 following the June announcement of her involvement. This news sparked fan inquiries about Randy Newman, who has composed music for the franchise since its inception in 1995.

Stanton clarified that he sought a new musical direction for the fifth installment from the start. He stated that Swift was the sole artist considered for the end-credits song, telling the audience, “Nothing else made sense.” Despite this clarity, Swift’s hesitation stemmed from professional ethics rather than artistic doubt.

Immediate Studio Session After Screening

Once Swift had time to review the project, she sought reassurance about her status. “I was repeatedly asking, ‘I know that it took me a couple months to come back to this project. Be honest: Did you guys replace me?’” she recalled. She emphasized her reluctance to take a slot already offered to another creator, stating, “‘I don’t want to kick somebody off of this project that you reached out to after (me),’... I understand, but I’m not in the business of doing that.”

The creative process accelerated rapidly once Swift viewed an early cut of the film. She proceeded directly to the studio with longtime collaborator Jack Antonoff. The duo completed “I Knew It, I Knew You” within hours, finalizing the track before the day concluded.
