Trump's Five-Word Jab at FBI Director After Drinking Scandal
President Trump publicly mocked FBI Director Kash Patel, questioning his need for publicity amid a series of scandals involving alcohol.

President Donald Trump delivered a pointed, five-word remark to FBI Director Kash Patel during a Monday evening event at the White House Rose Garden, an exchange the Daily Mail described as an "insult." Addressing guests and senior advisors, Trump offered a "special greeting mixed with a sarcastic hint" before asking Patel, "Does he get enough publicity?" He then added, "If you could get more publicity, it would be..." before cutting himself off with a chuckle.
The comment comes as Patel faces intense scrutiny over a series of reports detailing his drinking habits. An investigative report by The Atlantic in April alleged "excessive drinking and unjustified absences," prompting a wave of critical headlines. The report claimed that Patel's late-night parties and alcohol consumption forced aides to flee and attempt to postpone morning meetings. It also stated that his security team once requested "breaching equipment" after being unable to wake him from behind a locked door.
Denials, Lawsuit, and a Heated Timeline
Patel has denied all allegations and filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic. He is scheduled to testify Tuesday afternoon before the Senate Appropriations Committee. The controversy escalated in February when a video surfaced showing Patel drinking a bottle of beer with the men's Olympic hockey team in Milan. NBC News reported that this behavior left Trump personally dissatisfied, and that the president told Patel he was unhappy with his use of a government plane for the trip. The White House denied that report, stating, "The president has full confidence in his administration." Patel defended the trip as an official mission to attend a summit on event security with senior law enforcement officials.
Personalized Bourbon and Congressional Backlash
The Atlantic further reported that Patel travels with personalized bottles of bourbon whiskey engraved with "Kash Patel FBI Director," written in his preferred style, "Ka$h." The revelation of the branded liquor prompted Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee to mock the FBI director on social media. They wrote, "Kash Patel Bourbon: Strong notes of insecurity, narcissism, incompetence, and alcohol-fueled national security risks," adding that it "pairs well with taxpayer-funded trips and occasional SWAT-assisted wake-up calls."
Senator Dick Durbin, the top Democrat on the committee, has called on the Justice Department's inspector general to investigate "misuse or mismanagement of government resources" by Patel. The public image of Patel's reported drinking habits is particularly charged given that Trump is a lifelong teetotaler, having lost his older brother Fred Jr. to alcoholism.
