Search and rescue efforts remain underway off the northern coast of Cyprus following the sinking of a vessel carrying approximately 270 individuals, according to Reuters.

The maritime incident occurred near the city of Kyrenia—known locally as Girne—between two and 2.5 kilometers from shore. It took place shortly after the vessel departed from Kyrenia’s port en route to Taşucu in Turkey.

Initial assessment of the sinking

Preliminary reports indicate the boat began taking on water at its bow. The captain attempted to return toward land but lost control before the vessel capsized in open water.

Rescue operations commenced immediately after the capsizing and continue without interruption.
