Local authorities confirmed on Saturday, October 10, 2026, that eight individuals lost their lives in a mass shooting inside a residence in Erie, Pennsylvania. The victims included two young children and a pregnant woman. The total death toll rose to nine after the perpetrator took his own life at the scene.

Suspect Identified as Family Member

Erie Police Chief Rick Lohr stated that the shooter was a 45-year-old man. Seven of the deceased were related to him by blood or marriage. The eighth victim was identified as a friend of one of the family members and was pregnant.

According to initial investigations, the incident began on Friday afternoon at a house on Perry Street. Audio and video recordings collected by investigators captured gunshots emanating from within the home. This occurred just before two women arrived and attempted to knock on the door to investigate the noise.

Police Response and Scene Details

The armed man exited the residence and shot the two approaching women, killing them both, before returning inside. When police officers arrived, they discovered the bodies of the two women outside the structure. Security teams utilized a drone and a robot to survey the interior before entering the building.

Inside the first floor, officers found the remains of a five-year-old boy and a one-year-old girl. Additionally, two women and two young men were located in the stairwell area. The body of the suspect was recovered on the second floor. Authorities believe he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Local reports indicated that one of the female victims was 24 years old and eight months pregnant. Chief Lohr emphasized that all shootings had concluded prior to police arrival, refuting earlier rumors that gunfire continued during the siege of the home.

Ongoing Investigation into Motive

Investigators have not yet determined a motive for the attack. The ongoing inquiry includes interviewing other family members and examining mobile phones belonging to some of the victims to reconstruct the events leading up to the violence.

Police reached the location within minutes of receiving an alert from the ShotSpotter system. This technology employs acoustic sensors and artificial intelligence to detect and locate the source of gunfire.

Official Reactions and Community Impact

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro extended condolences to the families of the victims. He affirmed that his administration is prepared to provide necessary support to local authorities and city residents.

Erie Mayor Daria Devlin described the event as a tragedy that has deeply shocked the community. She expressed solidarity with the families affected by the loss.

District Attorney Elizabeth Herze urged the public to refrain from spreading rumors or speculating about the motives behind the crime. She stressed the importance of protecting the integrity of the investigation and respecting the privacy of the victims' relatives.
