The department revealed on Monday its commitment to providing a conditional loan to Vistra's nuclear fleet to help meet the increasing demand for electricity in the region.
President Donald Trump set a goal of quadrupling domestic nuclear energy production within 25 years.
The planned investments by Vistra at the Beaver Valley plant in Pennsylvania, and the Perry and Davis-Besse plants in Ohio, aim to produce more electricity from nuclear plants and extend the life of the reactors.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright said this is a way to provide affordable and reliable round-the-clock power.
