Egyptian Pop Star Steals the Spotlight in Israel

An Israeli arts report sheds light on Arabic pop music, with Egypt reigning supreme at the top, pointing to a compelling star breaking records and intriguing millions with his mystery, adopting a white ski mask as his artistic signature.

The Israeli channel 12, in its report dedicated to the current biggest pop star in the Arab world, 'Tolit,' explained that no one knows his name or facial features, as Tolit has become one of Egypt’s and the Arab world’s pop giants, hiding behind a complete veil of secrecy, sparking ongoing questions about his true identity and opinions.

The Hebrew channel added that Egypt has stood at the pinnacle of the Arab pop pyramid by a wide margin since the early 20th century, and this star, whose name is pronounced in English like the phrase "too late," conceals his face behind a woven white ski mask—a mask that doesn’t hide much, allowing those who know him personally to recognize him easily, yet his name remains under wraps, preserving his mystery, unlike some figures recently revealed.

It noted that his music blends Arabic pop with hip-hop and heavily relies on nostalgia from the 1990s and early 2000s, a fact confirmed by Mahmoud Shaba, a DJ and talent scout at a Cairo-based record label, in an interview with Afrifa, who clarified that the artist’s musical choices are consciously rooted in the atmosphere of that era, noting that the target audience is very young, making it imagined nostalgia akin to painting from memory.

Although this nostalgia targets a generation that never lived through that era, the star achieves overwhelming success: all thirteen songs he released since 2024 entered the top ten on Egypt’s chart, with seven topping the list, and his songs also rank highly on charts in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, and the Middle East.

With this magical success, the artist justified his choice of anonymity in past interviews, stating he prefers fans focus on the music, viewing the mask as a symbol of freedom, and emphasizing in October 2024 that the performer’s identity does not matter—the music is for the audience.

Regarding political stances, he has issued no official statement on the ongoing war in Gaza, but he has collaborated with two prominent Palestinian stars, Sant Levant and Eliana, who have recently drawn Israeli attention due to artistic disputes and copyright issues.

Notably, the Egyptian music market has dominated the Arab artistic scene for decades, with Cairo serving as the region’s capital of music production.

In recent years, the global phenomenon of masked artists has emerged as a way to focus attention on the art itself, away from media noise, aligning with digital transformations and the younger generation’s trend toward blending authenticity with modernity.

This massive success of a masked star in Egypt reflects the openness to experimentation in Egypt’s entertainment industry and its ability to innovate new artistic forms that break traditional molds while maintaining its leadership in the regional scene.
