A Missouri mother shared a video on TikTok showing her two daughters removing a turtle from a road to prevent it from being hit by vehicles. Despite a police officer observing the rescue, the mother was pulled over shortly after and issued a citation instead of receiving praise for the act.

Woman describes police officer's behavior as “disrespectful”

The video, posted by the mother under the username @ellenjaz17 on July 20, has garnered over 2.5 million views and more than 112,000 likes. It is a repost of an original video from June 23, closer to when the incident occurred.

Viewers expressed anger over the ticket and advised the mother not to pay it. One commenter suggested she explain to a judge that the turtle was a road hazard and criticized the police for not handling the situation themselves. Another questioned the presence of traffic, to which the mother replied that no cars were approaching and that a stoplight was red just out of view.

In a longer video, the mother recounted the events, stating she noticed another vehicle swerving to avoid the turtle. She stopped her car on the roadside, allowing her daughters to carry the turtle to the grass in the direction it was heading. The police officer who witnessed this later stopped her vehicle.

She initially believed the officer would commend them for saving the turtle but did not record the interaction, not anticipating any issues. Instead, the officer requested her license and registration without explaining the reason for the stop and subsequently issued a ticket for impeding traffic. The mother considers the citation unjustified, as the video shows no other vehicles nearby.

Describing the officer’s conduct, the mother said he was “super rude and angry for no reason” and labeled his behavior “disrespectful.” She has retained a lawyer and intends to contest the ticket in court.
