Foldable smartphones require specific maintenance routines to preserve the integrity of their internal screens and hinge mechanisms. Accumulated dust or improper handling during opening and closing cycles can lead to expensive repairs over time. Although manufacturers continue engineering more durable hinges, adopting simple daily habits helps extend device lifespan and reduces failure risks.

Dust and Pressure Risks

Debris and foreign particles represent primary threats to foldable devices. These contaminants can infiltrate areas surrounding the hinge or settle between the two screen panels, increasing the likelihood of internal display damage or impaired hinge movement. Users should inspect the gap between screens before closing the device to ensure no objects are present.

Avoid applying excessive force to the inner display or forcing the hinge into unnatural positions. It is also advisable to refrain from using these phones in sandy or dusty environments, such as beaches. Water resistance ratings do not necessarily guarantee protection against dust ingress. Manufacturers warn against neglecting proper cleaning methods and specifically advise against using compressed air sprays on the screen, which may cause harm.

Hinge Durability Myths

Companies often publish endurance tests citing thousands or hundreds of thousands of folding cycles. However, these figures do not imply that a device will fail immediately upon reaching that count. Real-world usage conditions differ significantly from laboratory settings, where tests may focus on isolated components rather than the entire assembly.

For instance, durability tests for the OLED screen in the Samsung Z Fold 7 demonstrated tolerance for 500,000 folding operations. This equates to more than ten years of use if the phone is folded approximately 100 times daily. Yet, this test applied only to the flexible display itself. It does not confirm that the hinge, flexible cables, and other internal parts share the same longevity.

Maintenance and Usage Habits

Users must monitor changes in hinge behavior during regular use. If opening or closing becomes difficult, or if unusual friction sounds emerge, avoid forcing the mechanism. Instead, seek inspection at a specialized service center. Modern models often allow certain daily tasks to be completed via the outer screen, reducing unnecessary folding cycles.

Protecting a foldable phone does not require extreme caution but demands awareness. Avoiding dust exposure, refraining from pressing the inner screen, and not forcing the hinge are key practices. These simple measures help prevent costly failures, particularly since replacing an internal display on some models can cost hundreds of dollars.
