Apple code hints at A20 Pro chip and landscape camera for iPad mini 8

References within Apple’s software code reportedly indicate that the next-generation iPad mini will be powered by an A20 Pro processor. The files also point to a redesign of the front-facing camera, moving it to the device’s long edge to better support landscape video calls.

Code reveals internal upgrades

The discovery was made by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris, though Apple has not officially announced an iPad mini 8. The code identifies the A20 Pro as a direct successor to the A17 Pro found in the 2024 model. This shift represents the most significant internal upgrade expected for the tablet.

Visual elements in the code files show a narrow cutout at the top of the display, which may relate to a revised audio system. Meanwhile, the volume and power buttons appear to remain along the upper area of the device.

Processor specifications and context

The current iPad mini utilizes an A17 Pro configuration with a five-core GPU. Earlier speculation suggested the successor might use either an A19 Pro or A20 Pro, but the newly found code narrows the likelihood toward the A20 Pro. This specific chip is also expected to appear in future iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models, where it has been associated with a six-core CPU and seven-core GPU.

Display and design rumors

Other potential changes remain less certain. Previous reports have pointed to an approximately 8.4-inch LTPS OLED display, although the code discovery does not confirm this panel technology. Those same reports suggested the compact tablet could retain a 60Hz refresh rate rather than adopting ProMotion.

A redesigned enclosure with improved water resistance has also been rumored. Apple is said to be testing an audio approach that uses vibrating housing surfaces, potentially reducing the need for conventional speaker grilles. While the display cutout seen in the reported code images is consistent with an audio redesign, it does not establish any IP water-resistance rating.

Launch timing expectations

Earlier expectations placed the OLED iPad mini’s launch toward the end of October 2026. For now, the A20 Pro reference and camera relocation have the strongest basis in Apple’s own files. The screen upgrade, water resistance features, and release timing still await confirmation from Apple.
