Google adds 'Notify When Left Behind' to Find Hub app
Google has introduced a new alert feature in its Find Hub app that notifies users when they leave personal items behind.

Google has integrated a new functionality into its Find Hub application, designed to help users locate lost devices and belongings. The update enables immediate alerts when individuals move away from specific personal items, preventing the discovery of loss only after leaving the location or hours later.
How the left-behind alert works
The feature is named "Notify When Left Behind." It sends a notification to the user's smartphone as soon as they separate from a paired tracking device attached to an item such as a wallet, keys, or bag. This mechanism aims to reduce the likelihood of misplacing personal effects.
Users can activate this setting within the Find Hub app on Android phones through a simple process. First, open the application and select the desired tracker or smart tag. Next, navigate to the device settings and locate the "Notify When Left Behind" option. Enabling this toggle ensures an alert triggers upon departure from the associated object.
Customization and noise reduction
Control over the feature operates independently for each tracking device. Users may enable alerts for critical items like wallets while disabling them for objects where separation poses no significant issue. Additionally, the system includes logic to minimize unnecessary notifications by suppressing alerts when the tracker remains in familiar or secure locations.
Third-party device compatibility
Google did not restrict this capability solely to its own hardware. The update extends support to external trackers compatible with Android, including Moto Tag and Chipolo devices. This broadens the utility of the unified platform for users employing various brands of smart tags.
Currently, the feature is available in the United States and select European regions. Access requires version 3.1.787-06 of the Find Hub app or any subsequent release. This rollout follows years during which competitors offered similar solutions; Apple provides left-behind alerts via its Find My app, while Samsung offers comparable functionality through SmartThings.
The addition targets Android users who frequently forget items, particularly those using diverse smart trackers. By consolidating these features into a single interface, Google seeks to enhance the overall experience for managing connected devices across multiple manufacturers.
