Augmental launches MouthPad, a tongue-operated computer mouse designed to assist users with motor disabilities and enable hands-free computing.
Augmental has officially introduced the MouthPad device for sale in the United States, a novel innovation that allows full computer control using the tongue. This technology primarily aims to assist individuals with motor disabilities while expanding the possibilities of hands-free computing.
The MouthPad is a thin device designed to be fixed inside the mouth, attaching to the upper teeth similarly to orthodontic braces. It features a pressure-sensitive touchpad resting against the roof of the mouth. The device relies on tongue movements combined with head tracking to control the mouse pointer, perform clicks, and scroll. Users can customize various gestures through a dedicated application.
The company reports that over 100 people with motor impairments use the device daily, with some operating it for up to 16 continuous hours, demonstrating its reliability for everyday use.
The second version of the MouthPad includes several enhancements, such as support for keyboard shortcuts activated by tongue gestures, the ability to reassign WASD keys for gaming, extended battery life exceeding seven hours, and simultaneous connectivity to multiple devices.
Augmental noted that one user achieved a control accuracy speed of 10.47 bits per second in a pointer precision test. The company states this rate approaches the performance levels of some surgically implanted brain-computer interfaces.
The MouthPad is priced at approximately $1,400, with an additional $100 required for a dental scan to customize the device to each user's mouth. This makes it a more affordable and accessible option compared to surgical solutions involving brain chip implants.
Alongside the MouthPad, Augmental unveiled a new device called Vox, a smart necklace worn around the neck that captures speech through body vibrations rather than airborne sound. This allows users to write, send messages, or interact with AI assistants even when speaking at very low volumes.
Vox does not operate continuously; it requires deliberate activation via a button or a tongue movement when paired with the MouthPad. This feature offers users enhanced privacy compared to devices that listen constantly.
The company plans to release a trial version of Vox later this year priced at $200. Proceeds from the initial sales will be allocated to providing MouthPad devices to those in need.
Future plans include integrating voice data with tongue movements to develop "silent speech" technology, potentially enabling communication with devices without producing any audible sound.
