Within three days of suspending its OxygenOS 16 update, OnePlus has addressed a bootloop bug and resumed the rollout for multiple device models. The company identified the issue on May 15 and restored the update distribution by May 18 after applying a fix.

The problematic versions, 16.0.7 and 16.0.5, were intended for the OnePlus 15 (US and India), OnePlus 13 and 12 series, along with several Nord devices. OnePlus confirmed that the defective build never reached external users, as it was caught during internal testing.

Details of the Bootloop Bug and Response

The root cause was traced to a faulty internal build that inadvertently became part of the final release candidate. Devices running this code experienced bootloops—repeated restarts—or failed to boot entirely. Upon discovery, OnePlus immediately halted the updates and launched an investigation to pinpoint the fault.

Engineers identified the problem as an initialization conflict within the code. After correcting this, the update process resumed, ensuring that no users would receive the unstable version going forward.

"After thorough investigation, we identified anomalous behavior in one of the builds. We took preventative measures and paused the deployment, as device stability and user experience are our top priorities. We can confirm that users who have already installed the update can continue using their devices normally," OnePlus stated.

Update Features and Testing Challenges

The OxygenOS 16.0.7 and 16.0.5 updates introduce significant enhancements, including AI-powered translation, document scanning, a redesigned lock screen, and smoother animations powered by the Luminous Rendering Engine. Additionally, a Live Space capsule interface offers quick access to notifications.

This extensive feature set likely increased the complexity of testing, contributing to the quality assurance gap that allowed the bug to slip through. OnePlus has committed to improving its internal testing procedures to prevent similar issues in future releases.

Advice for OnePlus Users

The update is now available again as of May 18. Owners of the OnePlus 15, 13, 12, and Nord devices who have not yet received the update can manually check for it via Settings > Software Update. OnePlus assures that the fixed version is safe to install.

Users who installed the update before the pause and have not encountered problems do not need to take any further action. This incident highlights the growing challenge manufacturers face as AI-driven features increase update complexity faster than quality assurance processes can adapt.
