PlayStation Plus Essential Subscription Fees Rise for New Users
New subscribers to PlayStation Plus Essential will face higher monthly and quarterly fees starting May 20, 2026, while annual pricing remains stable. Existing subscribers retain their current rates unless their subscription lapses, with exceptions in Turkey and India.

Starting May 20, 2026, new PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers will encounter increased subscription fees in certain regions. The monthly plan will rise from $10 to $11, and the three-month plan will increase by $3 to $28. However, the yearly subscription price remains unchanged.
Sony has not specified which markets will experience these changes, leaving many users uncertain about their status. Existing subscribers will maintain their current pricing as long as their subscriptions remain active. If a subscription expires and the user resubscribes, the new, higher rates will apply. Notably, subscribers in Turkey and India will face the updated prices upon renewal regardless of their original sign-up date.
Details of the Pricing Adjustment
The company attributes the price hike to "ongoing market conditions," a phrase previously used during a similar increase affecting over 20 countries in April 2025. That earlier wave impacted regions including Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Oceania, while Europe and the UK were excluded at the time. These areas had already experienced price adjustments in 2023, suggesting a pattern of periodic regional updates.
According to Sony's announcement, new customers will pay $10.99 USD, €9.99 EUR, or £7.99 GBP for one-month subscriptions, and $27.99 USD, €27.99 EUR, or £21.99 GBP for three-month subscriptions in affected areas.
Annual Plan Remains Stable
The 12-month subscription fee is not affected by the new pricing, offering a way for users to avoid the increase by committing to a longer-term plan before May 20. This loophole mirrors the situation during the 2023 price adjustments, prompting many subscribers to switch to annual plans to lock in current rates. For those on month-to-month plans, the 13% increase on the monthly fee represents a significant rise, especially for casual gamers who do not regularly engage with the service.
Market Context and Consumer Advice
The timing of Sony's price increase contrasts with Microsoft's recent decision to reduce prices for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. However, Microsoft's catalog updates now include delays of over a year for new Call of Duty releases. Sony has not indicated whether its Extra or Premium PlayStation Plus tiers will undergo similar price changes.
For current subscribers, the recommended course of action is to maintain active subscriptions and consider switching to the annual plan before the new pricing takes effect on May 20.
