Rising AI Chip Costs May Push PS6 Manufacturing Above $1000
Recent leaks reveal that PlayStation 6 production costs have surged due to increased AI memory chip prices, potentially exceeding $1000 per unit.

Sony is reportedly facing an unprecedented challenge with the upcoming PlayStation 6, as new leaks indicate a sharp rise in manufacturing costs over recent months. This increase is attributed to the sustained surge in prices of memory chips used in artificial intelligence data centers.
According to information shared by the well-known leaker Kepler_K2, the component cost for each PS6 unit has climbed to approximately $960. This marks a rise of nearly $200 compared to earlier estimates of $760 from March 2026. The price hike stems from growing demand for DRAM and NAND chips essential for AI systems, which has pushed global prices upward amid supply shortages.
Impact of AI on Electronics Manufacturing Costs
The competition for memory chips now extends beyond smartphones and computers, as AI companies and data centers consume vast amounts of high-performance memory. This increased demand strains supply chains and elevates electronic component costs across various industries. Analysts predict that memory prices will continue to rise in the coming years, potentially driving PS6 manufacturing expenses beyond the $1000 mark before mass production begins.
Sony’s Pricing Strategy and Potential Losses
Historically, Sony has sold PlayStation consoles with low profit margins or even at a loss initially, recouping revenue through game sales, subscriptions, and digital services. Previous generations saw the company absorb losses ranging from about $100 to $200 per unit at launch. However, if costs keep rising at the current pace, maintaining this approach may prove difficult. Some estimates suggest that manufacturing costs could reach between $1400 and $1500 by the launch date if component prices continue climbing.
Comparison With Previous PlayStation Models
For context, the base manufacturing cost of the PlayStation 5 was around $450 at its 2020 release, while its retail price was $499. The PlayStation 5 Pro’s component costs are estimated between $760 and $800, reflecting the significant hardware price increases in recent years.
Possible Delay in PS6 Release
Earlier reports indicate that both Sony and Microsoft are evaluating how rising component prices might affect their upcoming console launches, sparking speculation about potential delays for the next generation. Although Sony has yet to officially announce the PS6, rumors suggest a possible release window in 2027.
Expected Features of the Next Generation
Leaks anticipate that the PS6 will deliver substantial improvements in graphics performance, including enhanced ray tracing and AI technologies, alongside full backward compatibility with PS4 and PS5 titles. Nevertheless, the ongoing rise in production costs could make the final retail price one of the most significant challenges Sony faces when launching the new console generation.
