Effective May 20, 2026, PlayStation Plus subscription fees have increased for new subscribers across all three tiers in several countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Turkey, Poland, and India. The price adjustment applies to monthly and quarterly plans, while annual plans remain unchanged for now.

Details of subscription price changes

In the United States, the Essential tier's monthly fee has risen from $9.99 to $10.99. The Extra tier increased from $14.99 to $16.99, and the Premium tier from $17.99 to $19.99. Quarterly plans follow a similar pattern: Essential is now $27.99, up from $24.99; Extra moved to $43.99 from $39.99; and Premium increased to $54.99 from $49.99.

In the United Kingdom, the Essential tier monthly price is now £7.99. Within the European Union, the Essential tier monthly fee rose to €9.99 from €8.99. Despite these changes, annual subscription prices in the US, UK, and EU remain stable, as confirmed by Euronews.

Impact on existing and new subscribers

Current subscribers who maintain their existing plans will keep their current rates temporarily. However, if their subscription expires or they change tiers, the new pricing will apply immediately. Subscribers in Turkey and India are exceptions, as they will experience the price increase at their next billing cycle regardless of plan status.

According to Gadget Hacks, this pricing strategy appears intentional. By keeping annual prices steady while raising monthly and quarterly fees, Sony effectively penalizes short-term subscriptions. For example, in the UK, paying monthly over a year now costs approximately 65% more than purchasing an annual subscription upfront, encouraging longer-term commitments.

Context within the gaming market

This subscription price increase follows a hardware price rise for the PS5 earlier in 2026, where costs went up by $50/€100. The adjustment narrows the price gap between Sony and Microsoft, with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate priced at $20.99 per month. PS Plus Extra now costs $16.99 monthly, and Premium is approaching that level.

Sony's data indicates that the strategy is effective: 38% of PS Plus subscribers are currently on Extra or Premium tiers, compared to 17% in 2022. Whether this justifies ongoing price increases remains uncertain amid the rising overall expenses in gaming.
