Spotify Adds Narrated Magazine Articles to Premium Audiobook Hours

Spotify has expanded its audio content by introducing narrated long-form magazine articles accessible through its app, available immediately to Premium subscribers as part of their monthly 15-hour audiobook allowance. Users on the free tier can purchase individual articles for $1.99 each.

The platform offers more than 650 English-language magazine articles from well-known outlets such as Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vogue, Variety, Billboard, Vibe, GQ, Wired, Vanity Fair, and Pitchfork. These narrated pieces are produced internally by Spotify’s audiobooks team and are designed to complement the company’s existing podcast and audiobook selections.

According to Spotify’s communication with TechCrunch, the narration combines human and digital voices, with clear labels indicating which sections utilize digital voice technology.

This new content aims to diversify Spotify’s monetizable audio portfolio and encourage listeners to explore formats beyond music, potentially increasing engagement with longer-form audio such as audiobooks, which may offer higher profitability.

Colleen Prendergast, Licensing Lead at Spotify Audiobooks, explained in a blog post that introducing shorter-form content helps meet audiences where they are, fostering healthier listening habits and gradually boosting book engagement.

Currently, Spotify’s paid subscribers receive a set number of audiobook listening hours monthly, with options to purchase additional time. The company also provides a $9.99 monthly Audiobook Access plan for free-tier users and an $11.99 Audiobooks+ plan that doubles the listening hours.

This development follows a series of recent announcements from Spotify, including advancements in AI audio technology such as AI-generated podcasts, AI-assisted audiobook creation for authors, AI cover art and remix support, alongside non-AI features like fitness content integration.
