Stegra Launches World’s First Green Hydrogen Steel Plant in Sweden
Stegra’s green hydrogen-based steel plant in Boden, Sweden—the world’s first large-scale near-zero emissions facility—will cut emissions by up to 95% versus traditional blast furnaces, with Google securing environmental attribute certificates for up to 91,000 metric tons of its first-year output.

Up to 95% emissions reduction is projected for steel produced at Stegra’s Boden, Sweden facility—the world’s first large-scale, green hydrogen-based plant designed for near-zero emissions. Google has entered a partnership with Stegra to support the plant’s launch and operations.
Near-zero emissions steel production
Stegra’s process replaces coal-fired blast furnaces with renewable electricity–powered electrolysis to generate green hydrogen, which then reacts directly with iron ore to produce iron. This eliminates coal from the core reduction step—a shift Stegra estimates cuts greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 95% compared to conventional methods.
“We’re partnering with Stegra to help bring the world’s first large-scale, green hydrogen-based, near-zero emissions steel plant online,” Google stated. The company added that the steel meets the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) definition for near-zero emissions steel production, representing a milestone for an industry widely regarded as hard to decarbonize.
Under the agreement, Google will receive environmental attribute certificates (EACs) for up to 91,000 metric tons of steel produced during Stegra’s inaugural year. EACs allow corporate buyers to claim the environmental benefits of sustainably manufactured materials even when physical procurement is constrained by geography or supply chain structure.
“There are some players globally that can help move markets towards decarbonized products in an impactful way,” said Henrik Henriksson, Stegra CEO. “Google is naturally one such player. Beyond the call to action to increase the supply of sustainably produced steel, we are also grateful that the team at Google chose to work with Stegra and support our first years of operations in this way.”
Addressing steel-related emissions
Stegra noted that near-zero emissions steel will initially be available only in limited volumes and at select locations. EAC purchases enable committed buyers to account for steel-related emissions without requiring direct access to the physical material—addressing logistical and value chain barriers.
This mechanism also supports early-stage clean tech industrial ventures by helping scale production capacity and attract financing for new sustainable technologies.
“By supporting innovative technologies and partnering with coalitions like the Sustainable Steel Buyers Platform, we hope to bring more green building materials to market and increasingly incorporate them into our own operations,” Google said. The company estimated that using such steel could reduce embodied carbon emissions from data center infrastructure by up to 40%. In 2025, Google integrated low-carbon concrete, steel, or both in over 20 construction projects.
