WhatsApp has rolled out a new "guest call" capability designed to streamline communication. This update permits individuals to participate in audio and video conversations without possessing a WhatsApp account, aiming to broaden connectivity with friends, colleagues, and those outside the platform.

How guest access works

The feature enables existing users to invite people from outside the app to individual or group calls by sending them a specific link. Recipients can then join these sessions directly through their web browsers, eliminating the need to create an account or install the application on their devices.

Tools available to guests

Participants joining as guests have access to several core tools during the call, including screen sharing, raising hands, and reacting with emojis such as hearts and likes. There are no time restrictions imposed on how long a guest may remain in the conversation.

Security and privacy controls

Despite the open access, WhatsApp has implemented strict guidelines for this function. Guests cannot initiate calls themselves; they must receive an invitation from a registered user and require approval from the host before entering the session. The system prevents guests from adding other participants or sending messages within WhatsApp. Additionally, phone numbers of other attendees are hidden from guests, providing an extra layer of privacy during interactions.

Upcoming calendar integration

Development efforts extend beyond guest calls, with the company working on integrating calls with calendar applications. Scheduled for release later in 2026, this functionality will allow users to create WhatsApp calls directly through Google Calendar or Microsoft Outlook. This addition aims to simplify meeting scheduling and call organization, particularly for professionals who rely on the app for work-related communication.

Broader service enhancements

These developments form part of a wider series of updates intended to improve services, enhance privacy, and ease usability. Previous changes include username options that facilitate contact without sharing phone numbers directly, along with expanded capabilities for using the service across various devices. The current trajectory reflects WhatsApp’s focus on making its platform more flexible, ensuring communication remains possible even with individuals lacking accounts, while maintaining participation and privacy standards.
