Bielsa Rejects Modeling Role After Viral World Cup Photo

Marcelo Bielsa addressed the attention surrounding his World Cup photoshoot, emphasizing that he is not required to behave like a model. The Uruguay head coach became the subject of viral discussion after being seen looking down during an official FIFA media session.

After Uruguay's 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabia in Miami, Bielsa was questioned about the widely shared image of him staring at the ground. The 70-year-old coach declined to provide further explanation, stating, "I don't have to give any explanation. The picture was taken the way it was taken. I'm not a model. I have no answer for that. Should I also explain why I don't look at those who are speaking now? There are no explanations for me to give."

During his post-match press conference, Bielsa initially sought to focus on football matters but later returned to the topic of the photoshoot without prompting. He maintained that football managers should not be expected to perform or pose for cameras as models do. "I believe there's a limit in terms of what we need to explain," he said. "If I look up or down, there are so many things to be explained? Some situations do not need to be explained. We have no obligation to behave as models. Those things have no foundation. I did nothing wrong."

On the field, Uruguay had a challenging start to their Group H matches, falling behind 1-0 at halftime despite taking 27 shots, including 10 on target. Maxi Araujo secured a late equalizer in the 80th minute. Bielsa expressed dissatisfaction that his team only showed their best performance for half of the game. "I think the fact we didn't win is linked to not being able to get the best version of ourselves," he stated. "That's why we weren't able to win. We had everything to play in the first half like we did in the second half, but we only did it in half of the time."
