World Cup 2026
Canada's 6-0 Win Marred by Ismael Kone's Leg Injury at World Cup 2026
Canada secured a historic 6-0 victory over Qatar, but Ismael Kone suffered a severe leg injury, while Mexico qualified early for the World Cup knockout stages.
Canada achieved their first-ever World Cup victory by defeating Qatar 6-0, with Jonathan David scoring a hat-trick, positioning himself as a contender for the Golden Boot.
The match was overshadowed by a serious injury to Canadian player Ismael Kone, who was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg after a foul by Qatar’s Assim Madibo near the bench.
Canada’s manager Jesse Marsch described the moment, stating that everyone on the bench “could hear the bone snap.” He added, “I haven’t spoken to Ismael yet, he’s at the hospital, he will prepare for a surgery. I’m going to see him after this press conference.”
Marsch also mentioned that Kone’s family was with him at the hospital and expressed how the team was deeply affected by the injury. He praised Kone’s character, noting that despite the injury, Kone waved to the crowd to reassure others.
“This is our team,” Marsch said, highlighting the group’s special character during moments of challenge and triumph. He emphasized the team’s focus, saying, “We knew that Ismael wanted us to finish the job.”
Following a VAR review, Assim Madibo was sent off, reducing Qatar to nine players after Homam Ahmed had already been dismissed in the first half.
After the match, Marsch and Qatar’s coach Julen Lopetegui exchanged words, while Cyle Larin and Nathan Saliba also scored for Canada, along with an own goal by Mohamed Manai, securing Canada’s historic win.
In other World Cup 2026 action, Mexico became the first team to qualify for the knockout stages after a 1-0 victory over South Korea in Guadalajara.
Luis Romo scored the decisive goal by capitalizing on a loose ball following a collision between South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu and defender Lee Gi-hyuk inside the penalty area. This win ensures Mexico’s advancement to the last 32 with one game remaining.
Mexico is set to finish at the top of Group A, guaranteeing that they will play their last 32 and potentially last 16 matches on home soil.
