Germany Dominates Curacao 7-1 in 2026 World Cup Opener
Germany overwhelmed Curacao 7-1 in their Group E opener, while the Netherlands and Japan drew 3-3 in a thrilling Group F match at the 2026 World Cup.
Germany launched their 2026 World Cup campaign with a commanding 7-1 victory over Curacao in Houston’s NRG Stadium, marking a dominant start to the Group E fixtures.
Curacao, making their World Cup debut, faced a harsh introduction as Felix Nmecha opened the scoring for Germany within six minutes. Although Livano Comenencia equalized for Curacao 15 minutes later, the German side quickly regained control.
By halftime, goals from Nico Schlotterbeck and Kai Havertz had put Germany ahead 3-1. The second half saw Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown, Deniz Undav, and another goal from Havertz extend the lead to 7-1, replicating Germany’s largest World Cup margin since their 2014 semi-final win over Brazil.
Curacao, the smallest nation by size and population to ever compete in a World Cup, now face a tougher challenge against Cote d’Ivoire as Germany aim for a knockout stage berth for the first time since their 2014 triumph.
Netherlands and Japan Draw in High-Scoring Group F Match
At AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the Netherlands and Japan engaged in a tense Group F opener that ended 3-3 after a back-and-forth contest.
The first half was marked by few clear chances, but the game intensified after the break. Virgil van Dijk headed the Netherlands into the lead six minutes after halftime, assisted by Ryan Gravenberch.
Japan responded swiftly with Keito Nakamura scoring a deflected shot to equalize. Cryscencio Summerville then restored the Dutch lead with a left-footed curl, only for Koki Ogawa to level the score again with a powerful header from a Junya Ito corner.
Despite extending their unbeaten streak in World Cup group stages to 17 matches, the Netherlands saw this as two points dropped after twice surrendering the lead.
Cape Verde Faces Spain in World Cup Debut
Cape Verde prepares for its first World Cup appearance since gaining independence in 1975, set to face reigning European champions Spain at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
With Spain regarded as strong contenders for the title, Cape Verde’s coach Bubista is focused on damage limitation in what is seen as a David versus Goliath encounter. The team’s recent record includes six wins in their last seven World Cup qualifiers and two warm-up matches.
Spain will start without key players Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, who are on the bench, offering some hope for Cape Verde to keep the scoreline respectable.
Belgium Looks to Jeremy Doku Ahead of Egypt Clash
Belgium’s Group G opener against Egypt at Seattle’s Lumen Field will feature Kevin De Bruyne in what may be his final major tournament for the national team after a mixed season with Napoli.
De Bruyne emphasized the importance of winger Jeremy Doku, highlighting his development and efficiency over the past year during an interview with FOX Sports.
“Defending Jeremy for 90 minutes is impossible,” De Bruyne stated. “He has also become more efficient over the past year. He has found more moments where he can choose his situations. To play a top tournament, we need a good Doku.”
Doku’s strong performances at Manchester City during Pep Guardiola’s final season there set expectations high, while Egypt will rely on Mohamed Salah to break their winless streak at the World Cup finals.
