Michael Wood, the goalkeeper for Auckland, has postponed his wedding after being named in New Zealand's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Wood indicated that participating in the world's largest football tournament justifies sacrificing his planned wedding date.

Wood announced his engagement a year ago, at a time when he did not expect to be considered by coach Darren Bazeley for the World Cup. He had scheduled his marriage to his fiancée, Zana Rinton, for next month, coinciding with the tournament dates from June 11 to July 19 in North America.

Coach Bazeley confirmed this month that Wood, who has six international caps, will serve as the third goalkeeper in the 26-player squad, behind Max Crocombe and Alex Paulsen.

Although Wood's chances of playing are limited, Rinton has agreed to the change.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper told New Zealand media, "My fiancée has been very supportive of this decision. Canceling the wedding for a major tournament like this is not a bad thing; it only happens once every four years."

He added, "We will just postpone it until next year."

Wood's inclusion in New Zealand's squad followed a period of inconsistent performances during the current season, which led to his exclusion from Auckland's starting lineup.

He returned to the starting lineup promptly after his replacement, Oliver Sail, suffered a knee injury in January, ruling him out for the remainder of the Australian league season and the World Cup.

Wood made the most of his second opportunity, playing a key role in Auckland securing their first Australian league title. He saved a penalty that helped his team defeat Melbourne City in the playoffs and kept a clean sheet in the 1-0 victory over Sydney in last week's final, making Auckland the first New Zealand team to win the Australian A-League.

Wood feels some relief in being the third-choice goalkeeper for his national team at the World Cup. He said, "I think my role is very clear."

He added, "I will be the third goalkeeper and support the other keepers, and if I am called upon to play, I will give my best."

New Zealand, the lowest-ranked team among the 48 participants in the World Cup, will face the United States, Egypt, and Belgium in Group G at the 2026 tournament, which will take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
