World Cup 2026
Martinez to Start Joao Felix Against Uzbekistan After Portugal's Draw
Following Portugal's 1-1 draw with DR Congo, coach Martinez plans to start Joao Felix to strengthen the attack in the upcoming World Cup match.
Portugal's national team drew 1-1 with the Democratic Republic of Congo last Wednesday in the opening group stage match of the World Cup, a game that exposed a clear offensive weakness in the so-called "Europe's Brazil."
According to the Portuguese newspaper Record, coach Martinez has decided to include Joao Felix, the star of Al Nassr, in the starting lineup for the upcoming match against Uzbekistan to address this attacking deficiency.
The Spanish coach believes that Joao Felix's presence in the forward line will revitalize the attack, which is led by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Last season in the Saudi Professional League, the duo of Ronaldo and Joao Felix stood out significantly, leading Al Nassr to win the league title after a seven-year absence.
During that season, Ronaldo scored 28 goals, while Joao Felix netted 20 goals and provided 13 assists, earning him the award for the best player in the tournament.
Portugal is scheduled to face Uzbekistan next Tuesday in the second group stage match of the 2026 World Cup.
