Spanish Commentator Criticizes Refereeing in Egypt vs Argentina Match
Spanish commentator Manolo Lama harshly criticized refereeing decisions during the Egypt-Argentina match, calling them among the most controversial in tournament history.

Manolo Lama, a well-known Spanish commentator, launched a severe critique against the refereeing team in the Egypt versus Argentina match, describing the incidents involving the Egyptian team as some of the most controversial refereeing events in the history of the tournament.
Speaking on Spain's COPE radio, Lama stated that the Egyptian national team suffered clear refereeing injustice. He characterized the events as "a deception that will remain in football's memory," emphasizing that the decisions made by the match referee and the video assistant referee (VAR) directly influenced the game's outcome.
Lama pointed out inconsistencies in the use of VAR, noting that Egypt's disallowed goal was reviewed and canceled, whereas several contentious moments prior to Argentina's third goal, including contacts inside the penalty area, were not reviewed. He described this as a double standard in the application of the rules.
He added, "I have seen Maradona's hand goal and Thierry Henry's famous goal, but what happened in this match will be recorded as one of the most controversial refereeing events. This does not diminish the value of the Argentine team or Lionel Messi's status, but the referee's performance and the use of VAR raised significant questions."
These remarks coincided with growing frustration within the Egyptian camp. Head coach Hossam Hassan criticized the refereeing decisions, hinting at non-sporting factors affecting the match's flow, and affirmed that his team delivered a performance deserving of a better result.
The Egyptian Football Association also filed an official complaint with FIFA against the French refereeing team. The complaint requested an investigation into several decisions, notably the disallowed goal by Mostafa Ziko and the failure to call a foul against Mohamed Salah during the play that led to Argentina's winning goal.
The match, which ended with a 3-2 victory for Argentina after a dramatic comeback, sparked extensive debate in sports and media circles. There were calls for reviewing refereeing standards and ensuring the proper use of VAR in crucial matches.
