The 2026 World Cup, currently taking place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, has seen substitutes make significant scoring contributions, achieving a notably high goal rate.

According to a report by the global statistics platform Opta, out of the 134 goals scored so far in the tournament, 26 have been scored by substitute players, averaging 0.59 goals per match.

This figure represents the highest proportion of substitute goals in World Cup history. Previously, the highest rate was recorded during the 2014 Brazil World Cup, won by Germany, with 0.50 goals per match, followed by the 2022 Qatar World Cup with 0.47 goals per match.

Although substitutes scored 32 goals in the 2014 Brazil tournament, that total was accumulated over the entire competition, whereas 60 matches remain to be played in the 2026 edition.

In the 2022 Qatar World Cup, substitutes scored 30 goals at a rate of 0.47 per match, while the 1990 Italy World Cup saw 20 goals from substitutes, averaging 0.38 per match.

Notably, the top scorer of the 1990 World Cup was Salvatore Schillaci of Italy, who began the tournament as a substitute and scored the winning goal against Austria after coming on, subsequently becoming a starter.

The 2026 World Cup has highlighted several standout substitute performers, most prominently German player Deniz Ondaf, who scored three goals and assisted two more in matches against Curaçao and Ivory Coast, despite playing less than 60 minutes across both games.

The tournament also featured a remarkable moment by Sweden's Matthias Svanberg, who scored just 18 seconds after entering as a substitute against Tunisia, marking the second fastest goal ever scored by a substitute in World Cup history.
