Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called for a de-escalation of tensions between the United States and Iran in the wake of the midterm elections, which he described as "critically important," according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Albanese viewed the war in Iran, along with tariffs imposed on US trade partners, as "key factors" behind the election results, which will shift control of Congress to the Democratic Party, delivering a blow to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

Albanese added that these results would not change Canberra's approach to dealing with the White House, including calls for easing tensions between Washington and Tehran, according to the report.

Albanese affirmed that Australians can expect him to continue working diplomatically—serving Australia's national interests—to urge the United States to calm tensions.

Bloomberg reported on Friday, citing a well-informed diplomat, that the US and Iran are approaching a potential breakthrough in efforts to end the war, as Tehran has shown willingness to discuss issues related to its nuclear program previously considered off-limits for negotiation.
