Chad’s Cholera Outbreak Claims 13 Lives, 239 Cases Since Official Declaration

Chad’s Ministry of Health confirmed that the national cholera outbreak has resulted in 13 deaths and 239 confirmed cases since the official announcement of transmission on 24 July. The ministry stated the case fatality rate stands at 5.4%.

The ministry detailed in an official statement that nationwide recorded infections total approximately 239, including the 13 fatalities. It emphasized that the 5.4% mortality figure underscores the severity of the epidemiological situation in affected areas. The outbreak is primarily impacting the northern province of Hadjer-Lamis and the capital city of N'Djamena, where 11 of the 13 deaths occurred solely during the month of August — highlighting a pronounced urban concentration of severe cases in densely populated zones.

In response to the epidemic, authorities launched a vaccination campaign targeting disease containment. Approximately 50,800 individuals have received cholera vaccines since the formal outbreak declaration on 24 July. However, the ministry noted that the first recorded fatalities predate that announcement by over a month, having occurred on 13 June.
