China Constructs Extensive Missile Launch Complex Near Nuclear Silos
Satellite images reveal China building a vast network of missile launch platforms and facilities close to its isolated nuclear missile silos.

Satellite imagery has disclosed that China is developing an extensive network of missile launch platforms, bunkers, and communication points near its isolated nuclear missile silos, which house the Chinese military’s longest-range missiles.
Located in a remote Chinese desert, the emerging features of a large military complex have drawn attention from security experts who suggest it is designed to prevent any adversary from successfully launching a strike on China’s nuclear arsenal that would reliably disrupt its ability to retaliate.
China’s nuclear missiles already have the capability to reach any city within the United States.
The images reveal over 80 platforms that could be utilized by a fleet of mobile rocket launchers and China’s expanding air defense batteries.
Three security analysts who reviewed the images for Reuters noted that the site also includes facilities potentially intended for electronic warfare, satellite communications, and command operations.
The scale of these constructions, which have not been previously reported, indicates a large-scale expansion of hardened infrastructure aimed at protecting and operating China’s land-based nuclear forces.
Overall, this network signals significant progress in Beijing’s efforts to ensure a credible second-strike capability, underscoring the intensifying nuclear competition with the United States amid rising tensions over issues such as Taiwan.
Protecting the missile silos in the desert is a crucial factor in China’s declared objective of establishing a limited but reliable nuclear deterrent, a policy based on the ability to respond if struck first.
While the People’s Liberation Army can deploy nuclear weapons from submarines and aircraft, the silo fields in the northwestern Xinjiang region and Gansu province form the cornerstone of China’s nuclear forces.
This month, Chinese President Xi Jinping warned U.S. President Donald Trump that mismanaging disputes between their countries over Taiwan, which Beijing considers its territory, could lead them into a dangerous situation.
