Cyber Breach Exposes Data of Thousands of FBI Employees

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was reportedly subjected to a cyber breach, with personal and sensitive data of employees leaked, including emergency contacts, home addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, Social Security numbers, job titles, and field offices.

However, the FBI did not explicitly confirm it had been breached, but announced it is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the source of the alleged breach and whether it is linked to a third party or internal systems within the bureau. According to Bloomberg.

An online criminal group claimed responsibility for the operation and provided journalists with a sample of the stolen data, according to their statement. Bloomberg News reviewed this data, which included information on approximately 3,800 current and former FBI employees. When the newspaper cross-referenced names and addresses of FBI staff from the files with publicly available records, it found matching results.

Some FBI employees whose personal data appeared in the allegedly compromised materials had not received notification from the bureau’s security team, according to a U.S. official, as reported by the site.

Among the most sensitive details are those identifying the units in which certain employees work—particularly those involved in counterintelligence activities related to China and Russia—while others operate in secret units responsible for surveillance operations, drug trafficking investigations, domestic terrorism prevention, and electronic activities linked to the Middle East and Africa.

Records Dating Back to April 2026

Synthia Kaiser, former deputy assistant director of the FBI’s Cyber Crime Division, warned of the sensitivity of this data leak, especially for employees not holding public positions. She noted that exposing their identities could lead to harassment or targeting, raising concerns about their safety and ability to carry out duties. According to the site.

This development comes amid a series of recent cyberattacks on U.S. government agencies. Earlier this year, the FBI concluded that a breach affecting networks used for surveillance operations and other monitoring activities constituted a major incident.

Following the 2024 hack of AT&T systems, bureau officials warned of the potential theft of call and text message records belonging to FBI clients over several months.

Darin Mott, a former FBI agent who oversaw counterintelligence investigations, said the greatest risk lies in newer data reaching foreign intelligence services. Knowing where FBI personnel work and their identities could make them potential targets for exploitation and pose additional risks to their international travel.

According to the report, the leaked data includes records bearing the logo of the U.S. Department of State and containing names of FBI agents previously deployed overseas.

The collection also included mental health evaluations prepared by the Department of Justice, summarizing past medical issues faced by some employees, along with medical reports detailing surgical procedures. These files date between 2009 and 2012, suggesting they may have been extracted from an old archive.
