Donald Trump criticized Janeese Lewis George, the Democratic primary winner for D.C. mayor, calling her a "Communist adherent" and disputing her policies on Truth Social.

Donald Trump has described Janeese Lewis George, who secured a decisive victory in Washington D.C.’s Democratic mayoral primary, as a “Communist adherent.” Her win ensures she will replace Mayor Muriel E. Bowser in January, and Trump has already voiced his opposition.
On Sunday, Trump posted on Truth Social criticizing Janeese Lewis George and warned that her election would harm Washington. Although he misrepresented several of her policy positions, Trump confirmed he intends to meet with her.
“Washington D.C. is again a Safe and Prestigious Community,” Trump wrote. “Many people, including myself, have worked long and hard to get it there, and we will not let it be destroyed by a Communist adherent who has no intention to, MAKE WASHINGTON GREAT AGAIN!”
Trump outlined his objections by attributing various positions to Lewis George. He claimed she wants to “empty the prisons,” asserted she would turn the city into a sanctuary for undocumented immigrants, and accused her of opposing crime crackdowns while supporting cashless bail expansion. Several of these claims do not align with her public record. Lewis George has never advocated for emptying prisons. She did express support for diverting police funding before joining the D.C. Council but has since reversed that position.
Lewis George has openly criticized Trump’s decision to deploy immigration agents into D.C. neighborhoods. Throughout her campaign, she pledged to oppose federal interference in local matters.
Responding to Trump’s remarks, Lewis George’s campaign acknowledged inaccuracies in his statements but expressed willingness to collaborate. “Most” of what he wrote is “incorrect,” she said, adding that she remains “willing to work with anyone, including the Administration, to improve the lives of D.C. residents.”
“I will stand up to anyone who puts our city or its residents in harm’s way,” she added. “Making D.C. safe and more affordable for our residents is my immediate focus (via The Washington Post).”
