House Speaker Mike Johnson stated no one is above the law after being questioned about a Justice Department raid on Rep. Ilhan Omar’s home shortly before an election.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) addressed the Trump administration’s recent search warrant execution at the residence of Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) during a Tuesday interview with Fox News host Dana Perino. The discussion centered on whether the timing of the federal action, occurring close to an election, appeared politically motivated and if it violated Justice Department norms regarding pre-election enforcement activities.
Perino posed two specific questions to Johnson: first, whether he could disclose details about the case itself, and second, if he harbored concerns that allowing such a raid just before voters head to the polls made the process look overly political. Johnson responded by clarifying that he learned of the operation only after it had already taken place.
“No one is above the law in our system,” Johnson asserted, noting that the investigation reportedly spanned a significant period. He emphasized that a federal judge must have authorized the warrant, implying that the judicial branch determined the evidence was sufficient to merit the search. Consequently, Johnson argued that the public should reserve judgment and allow the legal system to function independently of political pressures.
While acknowledging that the government’s timing was “unfortunate for her [Omar] or others,” Johnson maintained that the legal framework operates separately from the political sphere. This stance contrasts with longstanding unwritten policies within the Justice Department, which typically avoid actions that could influence voter behavior within 60 days of an election.
Representative Omar reacted swiftly to the Monday raid via social media, describing the event as an effort to target political adversaries and weaponize federal law enforcement agencies. She stated, “For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation.” Reports indicate the underlying investigation involves immigration documents completed by Omar’s late father when she was a minor.
