Eight Understandings... A New Phase Between Beijing and Washington

Beijing and Washington announced that they had reached eight understandings during Chinese President Xi Jinping's recent state visit to the United States, outlining a new phase in relations between the two countries.

Xi and his American counterpart Donald Trump agreed to work towards a constructive relationship characterized by strategic stability, based on principles of respect, fairness, and mutual treatment.
The leaders also confirmed their attendance at this year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and G20 summits, and emphasized the necessity for Iran to fulfill its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons.
Regarding international navigation, both sides agreed that no country or institution should impose transit fees on international waterways, while recalling the alliance that united China and the United States during World War II.
On the trade front, Xi and Trump acknowledged an arrangement for a mutual reduction of tariffs worth $30 billion, reached between the trade teams of both countries.
The consensus also included strengthening cooperation in drug control and security, with acknowledgment of results achieved in this field, as well as an agreement to establish a dialogue between the two countries on artificial intelligence, with the next round scheduled for November.

On the military side, the armies agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding as soon as possible to enhance communications during crises and reduce the risk of their occurrence.

These understandings come at the conclusion of Xi's visit to the United States, which featured in-depth discussions with Trump on bilateral relations, alongside a number of key international and regional issues.
