Fifth Attack in October: Houthis Renew Bombardment of Aden Airport
The Houthi group renewed its bombardment of Aden airport on Wednesday following an urgent evacuation call, marking the fifth attack on the facility this month.
The Houthi group bombarded Aden airport again today, Wednesday, after issuing an urgent call to evacuate it.
Meanwhile, AFP reported, citing a source in Aden police, that a missile had fallen on the airport before the evacuation order issued by Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree earlier via the X platform.
This targeting comes within a series of repeated attacks that hit the airport during the current month of October.
The airport was attacked on October 7 with two ballistic missiles and booby-trapped drones, one of which fell near the runway minutes before the scheduled landing of a Yemenia Airways flight from Cairo, prompting authorities to divert the flight and evacuate the airport of passengers, staff, and aircraft.
On October 16 and 17, shelling was repeated with two missiles that fell inside the airport premises about 500 meters from an aircraft preparing to take off for Cairo, without recording human casualties, in the second attack in less than ten days.
The airport also suffered another attack on October 21 with a ballistic missile near the runway during air navigation activity.
The Houthis have escalated their targeting of Yemeni airports in a strategy aimed at weakening the legitimacy of the government in Aden and disrupting civil aviation movements. Attacks are often carried out near airport runways during the takeoff or landing of civilian flights, threatening passenger safety and forcing the evacuation of the airport or diversion of flights.
The Houthis claim their strikes target camps or military operations rooms adjacent to airports, such as Badr Camp near Aden airport, while the Yemeni government confirms they are direct attacks on civilian facilities.
