Germany Shaken by Spy Case: How She Spied for Russia!

The German federal prosecutor has brought charges against a woman in Berlin over suspected espionage on behalf of Russia.

According to a statement issued by Germany’s highest prosecutorial authority on Monday, the woman is accused of supplying information to a Russian intelligence official working at the Russian embassy.

As per the statement, the woman faces charges of conducting intelligence activities on behalf of a foreign entity.

The German-Ukrainian woman was arrested last January and has since been held in pre-trial detention.

According to the federal prosecutor’s indictment, the suspect had contact with the Russian intelligence officer as early as October 2023 at the latest.

The statement read: "The suspect supplied him over several years with numerous details about high-level events and facilitated his attendance at such events, partly under a pseudonym... The goal was to enable him to build his own network for intelligence purposes."

The prosecution also alleged that the suspect attempted "to recruit individuals from the German Ministry of Defense and the defense industry to serve her purposes."

At the request of the Russian intelligence officer, the suspect sought information regarding German defense policy and the defense industry, particularly amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

The State Security Division at Berlin’s Higher Regional Court must now decide whether to proceed with a trial and when.

On the day of her arrest last January, according to a prior statement by the federal prosecutor, the homes of the German-Ukrainian woman and two other suspects were searched.

The operations took place in the Rüdesheim area of Rhineland-Palatinate, the Havelland region in Brandenburg, and the city of Munich. At the time, the federal prosecutor did not disclose further details about the other suspects, stating they were released.

Previously reported information indicated that the operation also targeted two former members of the German armed forces; one a recently retired general staff officer, and the other a senior civil servant who had left the German military more than 15 years ago.

According to earlier reports, authorities suspected the two had leaked information related to their former duties through an intermediary. The federal prosecutor has not yet provided any new information about the potential involvement of the other suspects.
