Rescue teams have begun combing through rubble in search of survivors following a powerful earthquake that struck off the coast of Flores Island in eastern Indonesia. The tremor killed 20 people and triggered the flight of thousands, with videos circulating widely showing residents’ panic during the disaster.
Initial Toll and Ongoing Search Operations
Fachrul Rahman, the official overseeing rescue operations, confirmed a preliminary death toll of 20 and six injured. Search efforts continue for individuals believed trapped beneath collapsed structures in the districts of Nagikeo and Manggarai.
Landslides caused by the quake have hampered access for relief teams and severed multiple roads, complicating emergency response across affected areas.
Seismic Details and Aftershocks
Indonesia’s Geophysical Agency recorded the main shock at magnitude 7.7 and a depth of 15 kilometres. Several strong aftershocks followed the initial event.
Authorities issued an initial tsunami warning, detecting waves under one metre in height. The warning was lifted three hours later, with officials confirming no threat to neighbouring countries.
Widespread Disruption and Evacuations
The disaster led to the evacuation of 2,000 people in Nagikeo. Hospital patients were relocated to safer locations. Buildings and government facilities suffered collapses, electricity supply was cut off, and traffic congestion occurred across impacted zones.
Maumere Port — located 94 kilometres southeast of the epicentre — sustained severe damage, as documented in widely shared video footage. Additional footage showed destruction at the port of Maumere, also 94 kilometres from the quake’s origin point.
Geological Context
Indonesia lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it highly prone to frequent earthquakes. The most devastating in recent history was the 2004 quake, which claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands.
