Viral video footage reveals empty shelves in Italian stores amid widespread food supply disruptions caused by a large-scale truck drivers' protest. The Confederation of Commerce (Confcommercio) reports that the most complex situation is concentrated in the country's southern regions, where trucks have blocked highways for a week to demonstrate against high fuel prices.

Supply chain disruptions in the south

Pasquale Russo, Vice President of Confcommercio and head of Conftrasporto, highlighted the impact of restrictions on road transport. He stated that problems with supplies to shops and supermarkets already exist, particularly affecting fresh and perishable products as well as other goods. Russo warned that if the situation continues, it could threaten the regular availability of commodities, cause economic damage to businesses, and create additional inconvenience for consumers.

A certain shortage of goods is already noticeable in the capital's supermarkets. One major supermarket chain confirmed that empty store shelves and product shortages result from the closure of roads and highways in southern Italy. According to the Italian agency Adnkronos, local gas stations in the Naples area ran out of gasoline and diesel, with some experiencing long queues. Reports also indicated difficulties in collecting and transporting garbage.

Government response and negotiations

A meeting was held Tuesday at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport with representatives of the road transport sector. During this session, immediate funding of 480,000 euros was guaranteed to support the sector amidst rising fuel prices. Matteo Salvini, Minister of Infrastructure and Transport and Deputy Prime Minister of Italy, said the government intends to raise support measures to one billion euros. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni confirmed that the government is handling the truckers' demands with full attention and recognizes the strike's repercussions across the entire country.

Partial end to the blockade

Despite these assurances, only a portion of the sector's representatives announced the end of the strike. This partial cessation occurred in Sicily and partially in the southern region of Puglia. However, the decision was made to continue the protest in Calabria and Campania.
