Lula da Silva Wins Brazilian Presidency; Bolsonaro Demands Election Annulment
Brazil's electoral commission announced the victory of leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in a fourth term, defeating Senator Flavio Bolsonaro. The elder Bolsonaro, currently serving a prison sentence for attempting a coup, rejected the results and demanded the election be annulled.

Brazil's Electoral Commission announced early Monday morning that leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won a fourth presidential term after the runoff round.
Lula da Silva defeated his rival, right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, in the runoff to secure a fourth non-consecutive term.
According to official results, Lula received approximately 51.8% of the votes compared to 48.2% for former President Jair Bolsonaro's son.
The former president's son, far-right figure Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022), had led in the first round.
The elder Bolsonaro is serving a 27-year prison sentence under house arrest for attempting a coup following his loss in the 2022 elections.
With Lula's victory, Brazil did not ultimately turn rightward, unlike Argentina, Chile, and Colombia—countries supported by US President Donald Trump—but remained one of the few progressive strongholds in Latin America.
In his first comment on the win, Lula da Silva said Brazilians voted to "ensure democracy," pledging to regulate social platforms following allegations of interference in the elections.
Da Silva added that voters overcame the "interference" of digital platforms, after accusing Meta during his campaign of favoring his rival Bolsonaro through "algorithmic manipulation."
After announcing his electoral defeat, Bolsonaro expressed rejection of the result, confirming he would demand the "annulment of the elections."
Speaking in Brasilia, he stated: "It is impossible to acknowledge the election result," adding that "many things still need clarification," as he put it.
Bolsonaro referred to the judicial decision that allowed extending voting hours due to public transport issues that hindered some voters.
