Kyiv was hit by a major Russian aerial attack using drones and ballistic missiles early Thursday, with debris striking residential buildings.

Explosions rocked the Ukrainian capital Kyiv early Thursday as air defenses opened heavy fire during a large-scale Russian aerial assault, according to AFP reporters on the ground. Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents via Telegram to take immediate shelter, stating that "the enemy is attacking Kyiv with drones and ballistic missiles."
Timur Tkachenko, head of the city's military administration, reported that drone debris hit several buildings across the capital, including residential structures. Unofficial Telegram channels circulated videos showing burning sections of apartment blocks, though no immediate reports of casualties emerged.
The Ukrainian air force confirmed that Russian missiles also targeted other regions, including Kharkiv, Sumy, and Chernihiv in the north, as well as the central Poltava area. The attack follows a brief ceasefire that U.S. President Donald Trump announced had been reached days earlier.
Moscow and Kyiv have traded accusations of violating the truce. On Sunday, Ukrainian officials reported Russian drone strikes and approximately 150 battlefield engagements within 24 hours, despite the U.S.-brokered ceasefire, according to Reuters. Trump had announced on Friday that Russia and Ukraine agreed to a three-day halt in fighting from May 9 to May 11, as broader peace efforts to end the over-four-year war remain stalled.
