Iraqi officials have confirmed the existence of two secret Israeli military sites hidden in the country’s western desert, according to a recent investigation by The New York Times. The facilities were operational in 2025, providing logistical backing for military missions directed at Iran.

The classified bases functioned as a backdoor corridor for Israeli warplanes and commando teams, allowing them to strike targets deep inside Iranian territory before returning to these remote locations. The sites, described as airstrips and supply points concealed within the barren landscape, operated beyond the reach of any Iraqi oversight or monitoring.

American intelligence and military command were aware of the bases’ true purpose. However, the installations were marketed to both Washington and Baghdad as facilities dedicated to reconnaissance or counterterrorism support. Leaked intelligence files later revealed their direct involvement in offensive operations against Iranian installations.

Political Fallout in Baghdad

The discovery has triggered significant political turmoil in Baghdad. Official Iraqi circles are divided between outright denial of any foreign military infrastructure on their soil and tacit acknowledgments of “violations” that fall within the framework of security agreements with the United States. The revelations have intensified debates over national sovereignty and the limits of foreign intervention in Iraq.
