Vatican announces Pope Leo XIV is recovering well after lung cancer surgery, having spent a stable night and begun walking and breathing exercises.

The Vatican announced on Thursday that Pope Leo XIV, who is recovering from surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his lung, spent a stable night in the hospital and was able to have breakfast.
Pope Leo, aged 71, was diagnosed with pulmonary adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer. According to Reuters, surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung during an operation performed on Tuesday afternoon.
Earlier, the Vatican stated that Pope Leo XIV was recovering normally after the surgery, noting that blood test results and chest X-rays were within normal ranges.
In a statement reported by Agence France-Presse, it added that the Pope had begun walking inside his room and performing respiratory physiotherapy exercises, although further tests are still needed to determine whether the cancer has spread beyond the site of the lesion.
