Russia’s Berlin embassy dismissed German suspicions of Russian involvement in a drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, calling it a “fabricated provocation” and citing a new wave of anti-Russian hysteria in Germany.
Russia’s embassy in Berlin rejected on Friday German suspicions surrounding an alleged drone attack targeting a major air cargo hub in Germany earlier this week. In a statement published simultaneously in German and Russian on its official website, the embassy labeled the incident a “fabricated provocation” and described it as yet another instance of unsubstantiated accusations directed at Russia.
The embassy stated it was “concerned about a new wave of anti-Russian hysteria in Germany,” using that exact phrasing.
The German Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation days ago into what it suspects was a drone attack on a key military and cargo airport in eastern Germany. Authorities warned the incident could pose a threat to national security.
According to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, the probe focuses on a serious attack against Germany’s transport and logistics infrastructure — one with potential implications for both internal and external security.
Airport staff discovered the unmanned aerial vehicle late on Tuesday at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The facility serves as a major NATO logistics and air cargo center in eastern Germany. It also hosts a base for several An-124 heavy-lift cargo aircraft operated by Ukrainian Antonov Airlines.
German authorities have pointed to possible Russian involvement in the incident. The discovery of the explosive-laden drone triggered a security alert across relevant German agencies.
