Russian Osa submarine launches Kalibr missiles from the Sea of Japan
The Russian Osa submarine launched Kalibr cruise missiles from the Sea of Japan during military exercises, targeting both maritime and coastal objectives. The successful strikes were conducted from a distance of up to 1,000 kilometers.
The Osa submarine, part of the Russian Pacific Fleet (Project 636.3), launched Kalibr cruise missiles from waters of the Sea of Japan during military maneuvers.
The missiles targeted maritime and coastal objectives, according to the fleet's press service.
The press service explained that the diesel-electric Osa submarine carried out planned maneuvers, launching cruise missiles from the 'Kalibr-PL' (submarine-specific) system from the Sea of Japan toward maritime and coastal targets.
Before carrying out this combat training maneuver, the submarine's crew had secretly moved to the designated area.
According to sources, the first high-precision missile successfully hit a surface target—a mock naval vessel simulating a warship belonging to a hypothetical enemy—at a launch range of approximately 130 kilometers, while the second missile struck a coastal target at the Syurkum training site in Khabarovsk Krai, where the target distance exceeded 1,000 kilometers.
The fleet noted that civilian navigation safety in the missile launch zone was fully ensured and secured by ships, aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles belonging to the Pacific Fleet.
Notably, the Osa submarine officially joined the Russian Navy on November 16, 2022, and is the fourth submarine in a series of six Project 636.3 vessels assigned to the Pacific Fleet.
These submarines are distinguished by their optimal combination of acoustic stealth and target detection capabilities, along with strong armament including torpedoes and missiles. High-precision Kalibr missiles form the backbone of their striking power. The Osa submarine arrived at its fleet base in December 2024.
