Syrian Security Forces Confirm Suicide of Alaa Zahredine, Former Head of

Syrian internal security forces confirmed on Thursday that Alaa Zahredine, a senior militia commander operating under the ousted Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s regime, died by suicide during an attempted arrest following an extended surveillance and pursuit operation, according to the official SANA news agency.

Arrest Attempt and Fatal Outcome

According to SANA, internal security forces in the Rif Dimashq countryside thwarted Zahredine’s attempt to flee. He had previously led the “Homeland Shield Brigade” militia and was identified as one of Ghayath Dla’s most prominent operatives. Authorities stated he was implicated in crimes against civilians.

The operation relied on prolonged monitoring, tracking, and targeted pursuit, which ultimately enabled security forces to pinpoint his movements. A security checkpoint intercepted the vehicle Zahredine was traveling in—accompanied by another individual—after which he reportedly identified himself, drew a weapon, and shot himself to avoid capture. His companion was arrested.

Broader Counter-Criminal Campaign

This operation forms part of an ongoing security campaign targeting fugitives and individuals wanted for criminal acts. It follows the neutralization days earlier of Firas Abdul Karim Hamoud—known by the alias “Fajr 3”—in Tartous city. Hamoud had served as Ghayath Dla’s deputy in commanding armed groups active along Syria’s coastal region.

Ghayath Dla’s Background and Role

Ghayath Dla is a former officer in the Fourth Division, a unit formerly commanded by Maher al-Assad, brother of the deposed head of state. Dla emerged publicly during the coastal region events of March 2025 as a leading figure among armed groups composed of remnants of the former regime.

March 2025 Coastal Attacks and Aftermath

On 6 March 2025, coordinated attacks were carried out by pro-regime armed elements against Syrian security forces in the Latakia and Tartous governorates. These assaults triggered government military operations, armed clashes, and documented violations against civilians.

July 2025 Investigation Findings

In July of the same year, the Syrian Commission of Inquiry into the coastal region events reported documenting the deaths of 1,426 civilians and military personnel, alongside the disappearance of 20 others. The commission also referred the files of 298 suspected individuals accused of committing abuses to judicial authorities.
