Syrian security forces, on Friday, found a mass grave inside a well in the village of Mazraat al-Rahib in the Aleppo countryside, northern Syria, following a report that led to the discovery of the site.
According to initial data, the grave contains the remains of 56 people, including women and children, who were killed in 2013.
It is believed that their bodies were thrown into the well after their liquidation, according to the Syrian "Al-Ikhbariya" channel.
Information indicates that all victims were civilians, who were taken to a checkpoint in the area before being killed and their bodies thrown into the well, while some accounts suggest that some were thrown in alive and subjected to gunfire inside it.
The grave is located on the Khanaser–Athreya road, which was then considered an important military artery and saw the deployment of dozens of military checkpoints during the period of the former regime's control.
Authorities confirmed that the bodies had undergone significant decomposition, and only parts of the remains were left, which will be transferred to the Ministry of Health for necessary examinations and analyses, in an attempt to identify the victims.
The head of the National Commission for the Missing in Syria had announced that the number of people who went missing during decades of Al-Assad family rule and the civil war might exceed 300,000 people.
Tens of thousands of people were arrested and disappeared during the Syrian civil war alone, which erupted in 2011 after a crackdown on protests against Bashar al-Assad, who was overthrown from the presidency in December.
During the war, all parties were accused of committing atrocities, including ISIS, which controlled vast areas of Syria and neighboring Iraq, and committed widespread violations including executions.
