President Trump declares a three-day truce between Russia and Ukraine starting May 9, coinciding with Russia's Victory Day celebrations.

A three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine has been secured, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday, marking a temporary halt in hostilities after his mediation efforts. The truce is set to run from May 9 through May 11, aligning with Russia's "Victory Day" commemorations, Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
The agreement includes a suspension of all military operations during the ceasefire period, alongside a prisoner swap involving 1,000 captives from each side. Trump expressed gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for their approval, voicing hope that the move could pave the way to ending what he called a "long, bloody, and fierce" war.
Talks aimed at resolving the conflict—which Trump described as the largest since World War II—remain ongoing, he noted, asserting that progress toward a final settlement is increasing day by day.
