Trump Announces Massive Potash Purchase Deal with Belarus
President Donald Trump announced a major potash deal with Belarus, a Russian ally, aiming to secure cheaper supplies than currently imported from Canada.
President American Donald Trump announced via his platform "Truth Social" that he is preparing a "massive" agreement to purchase potash, a mineral primarily used as fertilizer, from Belarus, a Russia ally.
He emphasized that "prices will be significantly lower than what we pay today to Canada," which currently supplies the United States by a wide margin.
This announcement comes amid an intense trade dispute between the United States and Canada.
The United States imports nearly all of the potash it uses. In 2024, 79% of these imports came from Canada, followed by Russia (11%) and Belarus (4%) at a significant distance, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) government agency.
