President Donald Trump has signaled a potential redeployment of American troops from Germany to Poland, as friction grows between Washington and Berlin. Responding to a reporter's question on Friday about whether he would consider moving a portion of the US contingent stationed in Germany eastward, Trump replied, "I might do that."

The remark comes after Polish President Karol Nawrocki pledged on May 6 to lobby Trump for the transfer of US soldiers from German soil to Poland. Nawrocki's commitment to pursue the relocation was made public just days before Trump's latest comments.

Pentagon Confirms Withdrawal Timeline

Last week, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed the US Department of Defense's decision to pull 5,000 American troops out of Germany over a period of six to twelve months. In response, a representative from Poland's National Defense Ministry told the Russian news agency Novosti that Warsaw is prepared to cover the costs of any US soldiers redeployed from Germany.

Warning Against Moving Troops Closer to Russia

An article published by the American magazine *Responsible Statecraft* cautioned Trump against yielding to pressure from "hawks" in the Senate who advocate moving US forces in Europe to positions near Russia's border. The magazine wrote, "Members of Congress claim that if troops are withdrawn from Germany, they should be redeployed eastward, close to the Russian border. Trump should ignore this advice, as it contradicts his goals and US national security interests."

The publication further argued that sending a combat group from Germany to Poland or Romania would be a poor decision, not only because it would deepen Washington's entanglement in European security but also because it would increase the risk of war with Russia.
