Donald Trump left a sealed letter for Vice President JD Vance in the Oval Office, to be opened only if he is harmed during his official visit to China.

A sealed letter addressed to Vice President JD Vance has been placed in the drawer of the historic Resolute Desk in the Oval Office by President Donald Trump, with instructions that it be opened only if he meets with harm during his official trip to China. The existence of the letter was revealed Wednesday by Sebastian Gorka, an aide to the vice president, in an interview with the New York Post.
Gorka, who previously served as a counterterrorism strategy official in the Trump administration, described the letter as containing "specific directives or arrangements for the vice president should any harm or emergency incident befall Trump that prevents him from carrying out his duties." He added: "We have specific protocols whose details I cannot go into, but the letter is an integral part of them."
Separately, officials have cautioned that mishandling the Taiwan issue could ignite a conflict between Beijing and Washington. This warning coincides with Trump's participation in a high-level summit in the Chinese capital.
Gorka simultaneously stated that the administration harbors "no serious concerns" about the president being the target of an assassination attempt by "hostile foreign powers," denying any imminent threats of that nature.
The move comes amid escalating worries over Trump's security, particularly following several assassination attempts, the most recent occurring just weeks ago at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. That incident raised questions about the readiness of the protective measures surrounding the American president.
