Trump renews controversial promise: '$5,000 check'

US President Donald Trump repeated his pledge to provide a $5,000 check for every American if Republicans retain control of Congress, although Republican legislators are not campaigning on this promise.

Trump said during a rally in Mobile, Alabama: "If the Democrats win, you will have an economic depression, in my opinion, like 1929. It is not a good time."

He continued: "If the Republicans win, each of you will have $5,000 in your pocket and there will be economic success for our country as we have never seen before."

Trump regularly repeats the check promise, although few Republican legislators have endorsed the idea. Many of them raised concerns about the costs that would burden the country's treasuries and the potential impact on inflation.
